I don't think losing to St. Louis should be considered choking. They did win their 5th National Championship with this being their first at T3 Jr A.

First off congrats to Coach Behan and the St. Louis JR. Blues!! They had a great team and did what nobody thought anyone could do and beat not 1 but 2 EJ teams to win a National Championship. As far as the Ice Hawks choking I doubt I would say losing by 1 goal to the eventual national champions is choking!! The only 2 teams they lost to were the 2 teams that played for the title. Now I will say that the Hawks did lose a little composure in the game against South Shore but the officiating was awful in that game. Won't get into details but if I was that referee I would beg to not be scheduled to do a game in Rochester next year!! In any case they lost the game and did not advance but a great showing for the Hawks!!! Let me just remind you that a month or so into the season most people had written this team off and said that they wouldn't win the league or even make nationals and look what they did. We are very proud of what our team accomplished here in Rochester this year and hope next years team can repeat the success and maybe even surpass this years team!!! Thanks for a great season Hawks we are all very proud of you!!!

To confirm about the semifinal game officiating, not that I like to give the MIH faithful a break, but I too heard it was very poor.

Well considering the comissioner of the EJ came up to the coaching staff as they came off the ice and wanted to apologize for the officiating and let them know that the official was not one from their league I would say it was poor. Not saying that the Hawks would have won that game but it definitely would have made for a different game.

Officiating wouldn't have changed the outcome of that game. It was already 3-1 when all "questionable" calls started.

I think he said the outcome would be the same. Plus, if you look on Pointstreak, the penalty parade started when it was 2-1. Either way, I heard it was very poor officiating and the MIH had a legit issue. (i hate it when i support the MIH faithful)

I think that everyone is losing sight of the very clean style of play exhibited by the EJ. They had a team in 9 games and in only one did the EJ team have more penalty minutes - and that was by 2 minutes. In another, they tied the opponent for penalty. In all the rest, the penalty-plagued opponents had more. The total for nine games was EJ 140 minutes - all of their opponents 243 minutes.
Or maybe the officials were exhibiting a slight bias.
I certainly don't know - I wasn't there. People who were there seem quite silent on this board.

NewFan my son played JRS out east for a year and it is a different style of play (they don't like body contact ,they would rather run away or dump the puck) more of a north ,south game. It would make sense that E J teams would be penalised less, they seldom are close enough to anyone to cause an infraction. Are they superior in play ? I don't know, I guess you could check the rosters of the NCAA play off teams and see how many players roots in the E J.

I think the penalty disparity probably has more to do with skill set of the teams involved. The two EJ teams probably had the puck much more than their opponents so the chances for taking penalties is lower. It only makes sense that they were not penalized as much. The junk about not liking to be hit, well, I have yet to find a player who does like to get hit. Its part of the game, the good players play through it. My guess is the two EJ teams knew how to play through it.

You really think because of the location of a certain team that they are all a bunch of whimps????? You really are not in touch with reality. Like I said before, no player LIKES to get hit, but the good ones play through it and get the job done. The penalty disparity had more to do with talent disparity than anything. Plus being "physical" doesn't equate to being in the penalty box. Take for instance the Dubuque Thunderbirds. Without a doubt an extremely physical team, however they had the fewest PIMS in the Nationals with 14. I say again, when the puck is on your stick 75% of the game the odds are you will take far few penalties than the team chasing you.

The facts are simple. The EJHL teams out shot and played every team in the tournament. The two games that St. Louis played were even tilted heavily in favor of the EJHL teams. Cross Check has good logic. As a former player, I didn't like to get hit either but loved to give them. When a team controls the play that much, it is only reasonable to think that the team doing the hitting will get more penalties. More chances at having a back turned. More chances at getting a stick up. More chances of sticking a leg out. You see where I am going?
