According to Americanjuniorhockey.com there is a rumor going around that the mnjhl is considering leaving usa hockey for AAU. Is this true? If this were to happen how would it effect the league?

Maybe Use UR Head knows?

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

I am not an historian on MN Minor / Youth or Jr. Hockey, BUT as I remember MN Hockey for many years was not part of USAH AND they were very productive and had some of the BEST programs in the US. As I remember the programs in Warroad % Roseau(sp?) put out a LOT of pro players. They didn't need USAH (which supplies insurance and not much else) and they did fine... even GREAT and as I understand from people who lived in the area had the respect of the hockey community.
Maybe it might be a good idea if they did drop any affiliation with USAH.

Yes Sweet Pea, it is true.

the MJHL are pioneers.. USA Hockey is corrupt. why clean out a dirty closet when you can build a new house?!

story from Americanjuniorhockey.com

By Bobby Bigwheel
Rumors are swirling at the Chowder Cup taking place in the Boston area over the last few days. The most powerful and potentially the most significant is the rumor of the MJHL, that's right the Minnesota Junior Hockey League could be leaving USA Hockey for the AAU!

People are talking in Boston, and the hot topic is AAU and the potential move of several junior leagues to their program. To lose the MJHL would be an enormous blow to USA Hockey if it happens. Think of the influence this organization has on High School hockey and youth hockey throughout the entire state. Is it just rumor or is it something in the works? That's the question.

Could USA Hockey stand a blow of this nature? Could this start a chain reaction into youth hockey? If so, what is the end result? I think it may take some time to get the answers, but the speculation leads to an interesting shift in how hockey is operating in the United States.

Where there is smoke........

Oh wow, thx for the info UUH.
Okay, we know USAH may have some questionable tactics at times. MJHL was able to crack that barrier by acquiring hosting rights for Tier III Natl's for the next 2 years.
Why such a drastic move? To be sure movement among the players to other leagues could be hindered by this decision?

I find it interesting that a website that claims to be and for hockey news writes an article on a rumor.

Personally I have no idea if there is any truth behind the rumors but it did cross my mind that this could be a recruiting tactic to keep kids out east.

Just saying . . .

That is great news. Then we don't have to see USA Hockey Officials right Puck Dawg? Also we need more fighting and allow fighting in the stands. Every game should start with a fight. If you win the fight you get to start the game with the puck.

Seriously though if this really did happen with the League being a league on its own, could they even play in a National Tournament?

The way the NAHL is expanding. And it looks like they might go to Brookings next year there wont be any Minnesota Junior Hockey League areas left anyways.

Also with the teams leaving for Canada that sucks too!!!

What is going to happen to the Sqwaks Nest if there are no teams to play? What a lonely nest that will be.

USA Hockey Officials Development program is run by Scott ( Big Daddy ) Brand and has nothing to do with aau hockey so IF the Mjhl went to aau ( No possablity of that ) then they would have to find a new group of officials to use for their games and work out a payment and a lot of other crap and besides arnt Nats. in Rochester Mn for the next 2 years??? you are not in Michigan any more Toddo!!!! Rumors aren't rumors in this case. With USA Hockey putting the squeeze on Tier III Junior Hockey, the leagues have decided to take matters into their own hands. The issue is age restrictions that may or may not be put in place at the January USA Hockey Meetings. If those restrictions are put in place, all the Tier III leagues will bolt from USA Hockey and join the AAU. This is old news, decided right before the June USA Hockey Meetings. The MnJHL is part of the Tier III group who will leave if USA Hockey takes away any of the ages for Junior hockey at the Tier III level. The proposal is to allow only 19-20 year olds be allowed to play Tier III, which in turn would destroy Tier III. So this is not a rumor. USA Hockey follows through and cuts the ages, all Tier III goes to AAU, including the MnJHL. I suspect they have ample reasons to legally go after USA Hockey after they leave to secure grants and incentives that normally would be distributed to Tier III teams. This could be very ugly.

If an age limitation is imposed what will happen to all the 16, and 17 year olds that play tier 3 hockey this year? Will they be grandfathered in to the league and allowed to stay next season, or will they be forced to leave tier 3 until they turn 19?

I don't think anyone knows, it all depends on what USA Hockey does at its January Meeting. I hope cooler heads prevail and let well enough alone, however the Youth Council has the power in USA Hockey and they are positive that all the Tier III teams have destroyed their Midget programs. Its a war no one can win. The individuals on the Youth side here locally, who are the ones who got this movement started by implementing their own Tier III age in Illinois rule are claiming this will occur. The Junior folks I know, are all in agreement it could occur and all have indicated the AAU option is the plan if it does. Sorry Puckdog, this time the rumors are real. Like I said before, this could get very ugly. I am glad my kid is beyond this but anguish the thought that something that has been successful will forever be changed for the worse.

Puckdog, all these ref's are self employed independant contractors. USA hockey I don't think will cross that fine line by firing anyone for doing AAU sports. Did the government also breakup ATT at one time? Also indicated to me that there was talk at the summer meetings to raise Midget age to 19 or 20 to better control the tier III lges. Anyone else hear this?

I have to agree with xcheck. Many in the midget and high school programs have question the validity of Jr Tier III for years and many have bad mouth it especially AAA programs whose costs run higher than the tier III alternative. Is it jealousy or good reasoning? The opinions on why varies widely. The major issue though is the success of the tier III division over such a short span of time (I believe is an awesome thing). Many kids want to play IIIA. Yes kids represent success and of course dollars. I have always said USA Hockey should let the kids and their parents decide. They know what is best for themselves. XCheck I will make another one of my predictions for the future. If USA hockey muddles into this with age restrictions and chooses sides between AAA and tier III they will lose more than the IIIA leagues. Once IIIAs bolt to AAU, the AAU will get stronger and will present an even better alternate to many hockey players and their families. The old domino effect. It will attract youths and higher junior levels players. Also the talk of age restrictions I heard was in regards to IIIA only. My opinion only but I would think the PR on discrimination would howl loudly since they would treat c,b,II and I differently. I know in their wisdom they will do the right thing ) LOL

Yes we are all self employed that means we are responable for our owen Taxs and main Ins. it Dose NOT mean we can work for any group we want.Try telling big Daddy you have a high school game and you cant work a Jr game and just see how meany games you work next mounth, it is the same in youth hockey, you work for a district and you dont just jump around, Maybe that what you upers do but that crap dose not fly in Minnesota. So dont talk about something you know nothing about and AAU has its owen group of refs that they use, just like us in USA Hockey, cross the line and you will get BURNED these are facts in Mn. No AAU...

Puckdog, I as well have officiated for 25 plus years. So let's understand each other. You should have some concern about getting games if you cross the scab line. But the younger guys should have no fear. Most can and will schedule a mounth ahead, so just fill in where Scott is not using them. But to run and hide under a rock because your afraid you'll be blackballed is just BS. All it will take is one call about lawsuit and it will take care of itself. USA Hockey wants no part of this in a court of law. I say this because this happened about 10-12 years ago, USA are the one's who indicated they are self employed. Like I said earlier, didn't they breakup ATT? Guess what? We all still have telephone service.

Your right, never reffed a junior game for a USA hockey. But knowing who you are makes no difference to me. I know what is right and wrong. But because I live in Michigan should not subject me to your BS comments. If you USA hockey slappys want to act like your the only song and dance, that's fine by me. I just don't come to your dance. As far as the reffing goes, if your a young stud and want to move up the USA hockey ladder. By all means get ready to kiss alot of USA Hockey rear end. Oh yea, if you want people to know who you are. Use your real name, if not, don't act like we're all supposed to bow down to who we think you are!

You two really need to take it off-line. As for xcheck don't see where he deserves an unwarranted comeback on here again. He served his time and is back so leave the past where it belongs. Actually liked his question and responding to it. So should leave that alone too. As for the ref part trust me if things change it will get worked out too many good people in MN. As for the USA Hockey saying the pool is diluted because of all the leagues and teams and competition I say pttthhh. The talent pool is large and better than ever. More kids playing higher level hockey and playing it better. I would say if there is a problem its that there are too many kids to be scouted appropriately. This is just the same as the growth of HS football across the country. Also who would ever have thought tier I div 1 football would be taken on consistently by tier II div 1 football. Also Grand Valley State University has even place players in the NFL. It is about the youth programs (midget, HS and AAA) across the country and they don't like the talent. Hey cross check your good with stats so on SPs post they (USA) list kids moving on to college from various leagues. Are they giving the tier III leagues credit if a kid moves up a league and then to college. I have always thought tier III was development to move up to college eventually though maybe passing through CSHL to NAHL or OPJL and on to college and not just straight into a D1 program but actually developing to DIII programs also. Like your thoughts and any figures you might have derived. Besides my favorite movie is Rudy at ND football and my favorite story is about that fourth line 5'6" goalie from UM that won the CCHA tornament this year. Also another thought from an EJ point of view. Most of them support more than thier EJ team so the age thing will affect them less.

While it is unfortunate that this young MAN has not yet received the accolades or recognition you seem to feel he should have, truth is; HE IS 20 YEARS OLD. All of the coaches & scouts have seen him and don't have a need for his services. To again push him in front of those who have dismissed him at the cost of exposure of those whose time has come is a disservice to the young man, the hockey community, and especially those kids whose turn has come. He had his look.
There are instances of players moving on from college and minor pro teams. There are LOTS of opportunities for players that do not involve trying to move him back into a program for which he is no longer qualified.
If at this point he is unable to make a D series college program or minor pro team of some type, it is probably due to the fact he has not the talent or necessary skills to compete at this level.

Interesting that the Junior Council congratulates the Tier I and Tier II champions but don't congratulate the Tier III champions in their minutes.

Back to original part of this thread before a certain individual made it a crusade for his own personal career.

Everything I have heard from local to national contacts is this move to the AAU is a real possibility and in fact a certainty if USA Hockey limits the Tier III ages.

One last note, just to insure that there is no mistake here about my thoughts on officiating as heard once from a hall of fame coach: "Drop the puck and get the **** out of the way."

Doggy, don't bite too hard, that coach is from Minnesota.

Yes I noticed that too. They didn't congratulate them just listed them. Still I wonder how they have listed the players moving on. I know a lot of kids that are playing DIII and club that wouldn't have been looked at if they didn't play Juniors. Also I know of a lot of young men that hung the skates up early to start college on time. It is a tough decision. Ok xcheck toungue in cheek do you think they know your a promoter of the CSHL and didn't congratulate them because of that. LOL. Also I am eating crow right now, My tigers suck right now and all they can say is they lost three key players. Go Cubs... or is that White Sox.. I keep getting so confuse about Chicago baseball but those are some great Stadiums.

I wasn't a great ref but I had fun reffing for the 10 years I officiated. I wasn't fired PD..You can tell them that please. I travel too much in the winter now so I didn't renew as an official. To pay 75 dollars to USA hockey and 50 more to district 10 when I was only reffing about 30 games which I could make wasn't worth it.

I may get back involved though one of these years and then everyone look out. Especially squirt and peewee parents...right BC.
